Sea Life Experiences

South Padre Island's most prominent feature is obviously the ocean waters encompassing the tiny sliver of land. It's a great place to swim, to boat, and to fish. As you might expect, the sea is teeming with ocean life, and while you can find a variety of marine animals at the end of your fishing rod, you might want to have a more instructive experience.

Thankfully, you can see what lives underneath the surface by touring a few biological facilities on the island. Delve into a deeper understanding of our aquatic acquaintances during your South Padre vacation.

Sea Turtle Conservation Center

Adults (18+) - $10
Children (5-17) - $4

If you want something to do that is far less expensive, run to the Sea Turtle Conservation Center. Dedicated marine biologists find and take care of beach-ed and injured sea turtles, nursing them back to help with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. Guests pay a modest fee for this self-guided tour. Be prepared to bring a jacket just in case of bad weather.

You'll have a chance to meet a few of the turtle "residents" that are still taken care of to this day. Unlike traditional aquariums, you cannot touch or feed the sea turtles for safety reasons. However, you can watch them feed during their breakfast-time at 10a.m. For brand-new visitors, this is a must-see experience.

Another awe-inspiring sight is the hatchling season for the baby sea turtles born in the conservation center. This can range anywhere from mid-June to early-August, and will be posted sporadically in the early morning. If you happen to be on vacation, you may be able to see the sea turtles frenzy to the ocean. Unforgettable.

Want a show? Turtle Talks happen every day, where ambassadors go through the lives of different turtles and what it takes to reclaim the humble creatures. Those seeking a conservation message will find it here.

UTRGV Coastal Studies Lab

Cost: $500 per cruiseThe Rio Grande Reef is one of the few man-made reef habitats in the world, making it a memorable tourist destination for anyone willing to sail there. While you can paddle there in a kayak, one of the best ways to view the reef and experience marine life is by taking a boat ride with the University of Texas. Here, you can talk to professionals on a "floating classroom excursion".

Aside from seeing a myriad of wildlife floating around the island, you'll be able to see parts of the reef, learn about the types of creatures supported there, and much more. Perfect for families with young children or those who want to get out on the water with a group.
After you are done lounging on the beach, you may want to do something that is more unique. Interacting and learning about the local sea creatures can be a great way to expand your knowledge of these amazing animals.
